My text-based media choice is “Flipped”, a funny, heartfelt coming-of-age story novel told from two perspectives that offers insights into young romance and personal growth written by Wendelin Van Draanen, published in 2001.
The novel was adapted into the movie” Flipped” in 2010.
I think the adaptation of "Flipped" from a novel to a movie was a really good success. The choice of transforming this coming-of-age story into a film was appropriate, it allowed for a visual exploration of the dual perspectives and detailed emotions that form the core of the narrative. The medium of film is well-suited to capture the visual and emotional nuances of the characters' growth and the evolving dynamics of young romance. The cinematography and soundtrack were also done well, can enhance the emotional resonance of the story, creating a more immersive experience for the audience.
However, the question of whether a different medium, such as a TV show depends on the depth and scope of the text-based media. What makes "Flipped" successful is its intimate narrative style and exploration of the emotional evolution of its main character, which can be diluted over the course of multiple episodes of a TV show, where the plot tends to become loose.
If I were in charge of the adaptation, I might have considered expanding the film's runtime to delve even deeper into the characters' inner thoughts and backgrounds. This could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the protagonists' growth. The original book is written from both the boy and girl perspectives. The two protagonists each use their own perspective to tell the same thing, the protagonists take turns to tell, the boy talks after the girl talks, the girl talks after the boy talks, and so on. So when you see a girl talking about it, you will be confused, it is the same thing, and when you see a boy talking about it, it seems to be completely different, and you will be tempted to flip the book over and look back at what the boy said. “flip” would be a verb here, it would be an act of reading a book, which is difficult to show in a movie.

What I heard in critique about how I can make my mask more exaggerated and interesting was:
First of all, the elements I used is a bit limited, though the idea that butterflies emerging from a cocoon is cool and suitable to my thesis of representing the transformation and self-discovery of ones identity, to improve the strength of installing confidence, self-acceptance and the sense of identity, only emphasis the final form of the butterfly is not enough. Secondly, I should show that fear and confusion still exist, and I should show a state that goes from confusion to determination. And finally, I should explore stuff also relates to the growth of self-acceptance, such as Flower Blooming that represents growth or Moon Phases that different phases of the moon can represent the various stages of self-discovery and acceptance, with each phase signifying a different aspect of personal growth.
It was helpful because it really gives me a look on how could I improve my mask making, I've always been a little confused about the choice of elements, the discussion helped me built a new perspective on element choosing.
What I plan to do next, I will work on the head structure hidden behind on the mask and do the butterfly paper folding on it. And the fabric and silk covering on the basement. And finally the painting on the mask as well as the decorations.
For the rest of my projects, Im planning to purchase more sparkling silver wire to construct the base of the head of the mask, and I will buy some fabric and silk to cover those wires. I will also buy some more pretty color paper to do paper cutout decorated on the head.
It took me about 1 hour to built the basic basement, Im planning a 1 hour on improving the constructions; 30m for each paper cut out, so 10 cut outs for 5h, 2h on painting on the mask, 3h on covering the wires, 2h for purchasing. An total estimate of 11h of making process.
When I was writing the letter to my partner in seminar class, I found that my understanding of my partner was getting deeper and deeper, and her image gradually took shape in my mind. I began to figure out her predicament and thought of ways to give solutions and comfort to her from my point of view. Based on this, I then start my define of my bridge project on studio, I extract the words such as self-acceptance, determination and installing confidence from the letter I was writing. The writing process gave me a very strong basement for the define and ideation process in the design thinking for my studio class.

{{< figure src="portfolio/mask-making/p-head-cover.avif" caption="Process Hat" >}}
{{< /gallery >}}
What I heard in the critique is:
The could be improvements on the flower hats-the color and texture should be upgraded. The current look comes off as a bit cheap. There is advice of switching it to black, which would create a nice contrast with the mask and give it a harmonious vibe.
And again, the flower elements could use some enhancements. Adding stages like flower buds at the bottom of the hat would really showcase the growth process. It's like telling a story of self-growth through the design.
the eye parts need more decoration, and those hidden cottons in the background should be removed.
And there is a suggestion of buying a model of human head to check the composition of mask and hat. It would be more easier for me to check the whole progress and perspective to better understand how the mask and hat come together.
### Next Steps
So what I plan to do next is:
Firstly, repaint the whole leaves on the flower hats, make it more linkage to the mask. There are around 40 leaves here. It will take around 5min for each one, which means a total of 3h for it. For the flower bud, it will take 15min for each one, and a total of 4h for it.
Next, I'll focus on creating a seamless connection between the mask and the hat using a Twisting stick.
I want to make more exaggeration on my mask, except for improve the mask decoration, change color of leaves and adding flower buds that shows stages. I may consider to add something that grow out of the flower hat more dramatically, and I might want to build some butterflies out of wire and let her fly out of the flower hat to show more exaggeration.

Having a mask made for me was an amazing experience. It had been a long time since I last wore a mask that covered most of my face. With the mask on, I could conceal my facial expressions and hide the direction of my gaze. The mask allowed me to transform into something more special rather than my usual self.
The mask was crafted based on my personality. As an INFP personality type known for being introverted and sensitive, my partner appropriately chose a deer as the mask's main motif. Chinese cultural elements like Peking Opera masks and hemp rope were incorporated as nods to my cultural background that greatly influenced me. Spikes were added to the forehead for helping me protect myself.
What captivated me most were the mask's exaggerated branches. Nylon lace was intertwined with the branches in a fusion of nature and human artifice. To reflect my tendency towards introversion paired with kindness, my partner embellished the mask with ribbons of silk.

## Reflection
This is the first time for me to use Adobe Premiere Pro. At the beginning, the project production was quite challenging, but after gradually getting familiar with the workspace of Pr, the idea and creation became the focus. When I was making the photo-roman, I found that sound track played a very important role in the whole production, as it could stir up emotions and show the state of different periods. What surprised me most was that when the photo began to step on the music point, it greatly strengthened the original mood of the story version, so as to better express my ideas.

Creative making is a process that involves bringing imagination and thoughts into a tangible, visual form that can be seen, experienced, and judged. It is a culmination of past experiences, diverse cultures, and individual perspectives that come together to create something innovative and original.
At the heart of creative making lies the concept of iteration. It is a process of continuous improvement, where ideas are refined and evolved through a series of incremental changes. This iterative approach, known as Kaizen, is a Japanese term that translates to "good change" or "improvement." By embracing this mindset, creators can constantly push their boundaries and strive for excellence in their work.
Storytelling is another crucial aspect of creative making. It allows creators to infuse their work with meaning, emotion, and purpose. Whether through data visualization, visual identity, or any other medium, the ability to convey a compelling narrative is what sets great creative work apart.
Inspiration plays a vital role in the creative process. It can come from various sources, such as nature, art, technology, or personal experiences. By being open to inspiration and actively seeking it out, creators can fuel their imagination and generate fresh ideas.
Creative making often involves stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing the unknown. It requires a willingness to experiment, take risks, and explore new possibilities. By pushing boundaries and challenging conventional thinking, creators can unlock their full potential and create truly original work.
Collaboration is another key element of creative making. When individuals with diverse skills and perspectives come together, they can achieve remarkable results. Through brainstorming sessions, group discussions, and teamwork, creators can leverage each other's strengths and generate ideas that are greater than the sum of their parts.
The creative process also demands a balance between creativity and production. It is essential to hold the integrity of ideas while navigating the practical constraints of bringing them to life. This often involves problem-solving, adapting to limitations, and finding innovative solutions.
Creative making is a transformative process that allows creators to turn abstract concepts into tangible forms. It involves the use of diverse materials, technologies, and techniques to realize ideas. From transforming 2D sketches into 3D sculptures to leveraging AI and digital tools, the possibilities are endless.
Research plays a crucial role in the creative process. By gathering information, analyzing data, and learning from past experiences, creators can make informed decisions and progress their ideas. It is through this continuous cycle of research, experimentation, and iteration that breakthroughs are achieved.
Ultimately, creative making thrives in a supportive and encouraging environment. It requires a space where individuals can be themselves, think independently, and explore without limitations. By fostering a culture of creativity, we can unlock the full potential of human imagination and create works that inspire, inform, and transform the world around us.
In conclusion, creative making is a multifaceted process that encompasses imagination, iteration, storytelling, inspiration, collaboration, problem-solving, and the use of diverse materials and technologies. It is a journey of continuous growth and improvement, where creators push boundaries, embrace challenges, and strive to bring their unique visions to life. Through creative making, we have the power to shape our world and leave a lasting impact on society.
